Body language

What you say before you speak

Body language is what the room reads before you say a word: eye contact, posture, how open you look, where your hands go. Volo's body language track has nine three-minute lessons on each signal, with examples you can tap to reveal and one small real-world step at the end of every lesson.

A Volo lesson on stage presence with do and don't examples

What you'll learn

9 lessons, three minutes each

What you say without speaking — eye contact, posture, presence. Every lesson ends with one small step to try in the real world.

  1. 01

    Eye Contact

    Free

It's the most universal signal we send, and the one most people get wrong without ever realising it.

    Lesson · 4 min

  2. 02

    Reading Others

One signal on its own tells you almost nothing. You learn to read people by watching what changes.

    Lesson · 4 min

  3. 03

    Posture and Presence

Presence isn't volume or charisma. It's a small set of postural choices the room reads in seconds.

    Lesson · 3 min

  4. 04

    Walking Into a Room

The entrance, the placement, and how to join a circle mid-conversation. The room reads you before you speak.

    Lesson · 3 min

  5. 05

    The Genuine Smile

People read the difference between a real smile and a polite one in milliseconds.

    Lesson · 3 min

  6. 06

    Open vs Closed

How open or closed your body looks decides how people read you before you say a word.

    Lesson · 3 min

  7. 07

    Hands and Gestures

Some gestures make you compelling. Others quietly leak nervous energy you don't know you're showing.

    Lesson · 3 min

  8. 08

    Personal Space

Stand too close and people pull back. Stand too far and you feel cold. The right distance depends on the situation.

    Lesson · 4 min

  9. 09

    Subtle Mirroring

It's the quiet mechanic behind 'we just clicked', and you can learn it on purpose, without ever copying anyone.

    Lesson · 3 min

How do I make better eye contact?

Eye contact is the most universal signal we send and the one most people get wrong without ever realising it. Too little reads as nervous, too much reads as intense, and the fix is rhythm rather than duration: hold while they speak, break naturally when you think, come back when you land a point. Volo's Eye Contact lesson is free and takes four minutes.

How do I look more confident?

Presence is not volume. It is a small set of postural choices the room reads in seconds: where your weight sits, what your hands do, how much space you take and whether you look open or closed. Volo's Posture and Presence, Open vs Closed and Hands and Gestures lessons each isolate one of those choices, and Walking Into a Room puts them together for the entrance.

How do I read other people's body language?

One signal on its own tells you almost nothing. Crossed arms might mean closed, or cold, or comfortable. You read people by watching what changes: the shift when a topic lands, the lean when they are interested. Volo's Reading Others lesson teaches the baseline-and-change method, and Subtle Mirroring shows the quiet mechanic behind "we just clicked".

Practice it out loud

Rehearse the real moments

Each roleplay puts you in a scene with a character who pushes back the way real people do. Type or speak your lines. A coach tells you what landed.

  • Priya

    Easy

    Introducing yourself at a party

    Walk up and say hello

You're at a friend's party where you barely know anyone. A small group near the snacks is chatting and laughing. Your friend is busy hosting. You want to walk over and join them rather than stand alone all night.

    AI roleplay · 3 to 5 min

  • Mara

    Medium

Joining a conversation full of strangers

Find your way into the group

You're at a work social where you only know the colleague who invited you, and they've wandered off. A group of four is mid-conversation, laughing about a shared story you weren't part of. You want to join rather than check your phone in the corner.

What to say

Real lines for real moments

Steal them or make them yours. Every script comes in warm, playful and direct, with a note on why it works.

  • Free script

When someone compliments you and you freeze

Someone says something genuinely kind and your instinct is to argue with them or deflect it into the floor.

“That really means a lot, thank you. I put more into it than it probably looks like.”
  • Free script

When you want to compliment a stranger without being weird

Their jacket is great, their dog is perfect, whatever it is, you want to say so. You just don't want to make it strange for either of you.

“Sorry to interrupt your day, I just had to say that jacket is fantastic. Okay, that's all, carry on.”
  • Script

When you're praised in front of a group

Someone just spotlighted you in a meeting or a toast, every head turned your way, and your face is deciding between fifteen expressions.

Three ways to say it (warm, playful, direct) plus why each works. Unlocks in Volo.

  • Free script

When you join a group conversation already in progress

There's a circle of people mid-conversation and no obvious door in. Hovering at the edge feels worse every second.

“This looks like the fun corner. What did I miss?”

Questions

Fair questions

Can body language be practised in an app?

The learning happens in the app, and the practice happens in the world. Every lesson ends with one small step to try in real life, such as a specific way to enter your next meeting.

Is body language different on stage?

Yes. Gesture, movement and eye contact all scale with the size of the room. Body Language on Stage is in the public speaking track.

Will this make me stiff or fake?

No. The lessons are about removing the signals that leak nervous energy, not adding performed ones. A genuine smile is the first lesson for a reason.

What about personal space?

Personal Space is its own lesson: stand too close and people pull back, too far and you read as cold, and the right distance depends on the situation.
