Social anxiety

Calmer in rooms that used to scare you

You overcome social anxiety by practising in small, safe steps until the rooms stop feeling dangerous, not by waiting to feel ready. Volo's social anxiety track has nine lessons on breath and body techniques, breaking thought spirals, pointing attention outward and building your own exposure ladder, plus AI roleplays where the stakes are zero and nobody is watching.

What you'll learn

9 lessons, three minutes each

Calm your nerves so you can show up as yourself. Every lesson ends with one small step to try in the real world.

  1. 01

    Breath and Body Techniques

    Free

Two tools that work in under two minutes, and neither needs the thinking part of your brain.

    Lesson · 3 min

  2. 02

    Breaking Thought Spirals

Spirals follow the same shape every time. Naming the shape is the first way out.

    Lesson · 3 min

  3. 03

    Reframing Nerves

In your body, nerves and excitement are the exact same thing. What you call it is partly up to you.

    Lesson · 2 min

  4. 04

    Attention Out, Not In

Anxiety turns your attention on yourself like a spotlight. Everything gets easier when you point it back out.

    Lesson · 3 min

  5. 05

    Pre-Event Preparation

The calmest person in the room did their prep before they arrived. Ten minutes covers it.

    Lesson · 3 min

  6. 06

    The Exposure Ladder

The engine behind every treatment that actually works for social anxiety. And you can run a gentle version of it yourself.

    Lesson · 3 min

  7. 07

    Dropping Safety Behaviors

The drink, the phone, the rehearsed line. The crutches that get you through the night are what keep the fear alive.

    Lesson · 3 min

  8. 08

    Recovering After a Misstep

The thing you can't stop replaying didn't happen the way you remember it.

    Lesson · 3 min

  9. 09

    When to Seek Help

How to tell when the next tool is a professional, and what actually happens when you reach for one.

    Lesson · 3 min

How do I overcome social anxiety and shyness?

Two things, in order. First, tools for the moment: a breathing pattern and a body reset that work in under two minutes and do not need the thinking part of your brain, which has usually left. Second, a ladder: a list of situations from mildly uncomfortable to genuinely scary, climbed one rung at a time. That ladder is the engine behind every treatment that actually works for social anxiety, and Volo teaches you to build and run a gentle version yourself.

How do I stop being awkward in social situations?

Point your attention outward. Anxiety turns attention on yourself like a spotlight, and everything you notice under it (your hands, your voice, the silence) feels like evidence. The lesson Attention Out, Not In teaches a simple redirect, and Recovering After a Misstep deals with the replay afterwards, which is usually worse than the moment itself. Then rehearse the moments you dread, like introducing yourself at a party, in a roleplay where the only witness is an AI.

Can I overcome social anxiety without therapy?

Many people with mild to moderate social anxiety make real progress with self-guided practice built on the same principles therapists use: exposure in small steps, dropping safety behaviours like the drink or the phone, and reframing nerves as the same physical state as excitement. Volo teaches those principles in plain language. It is not a replacement for a professional, and the track includes a lesson on when to seek help and what actually happens when you do.

Practice it out loud

Rehearse the real moments

Each roleplay puts you in a scene with a character who pushes back the way real people do. Type or speak your lines. A coach tells you what landed.

  • The other person

    EasyFree

Breaking the ice in a waiting room

    Turn silence into a chat

You're in the waiting room at a doctor's office with one other person, and it has been silent for ten minutes past your appointment time. The receptionist already warned you the doctor is running behind. You'd like to make the wait less awkward and maybe have a pleasant chat. The person beside you lets out a sigh, an opening you can take.

    AI roleplay · 3 to 5 min

  • Priya

    Easy

    Introducing yourself at a party

    Walk up and say hello

You're at a friend's party where you barely know anyone. A small group near the snacks is chatting and laughing. Your friend is busy hosting. You want to walk over and join them rather than stand alone all night.

    AI roleplay · 3 to 5 min

  • Mara

    Medium

Joining a conversation full of strangers

Find your way into the group

You're at a work social where you only know the colleague who invited you, and they've wandered off. A group of four is mid-conversation, laughing about a shared story you weren't part of. You want to join rather than check your phone in the corner.

    AI roleplay · 3 to 5 min

  • Theo

    Medium

Recovering from something awkward you said

Save a moment at a party

You're at a party and just made a joke at Theo's expense — a crack about him still living with his parents — that landed as a real dig instead of the laugh you meant. The room went quiet for a beat and you can feel everyone clocking it. You need to recover without making it weirder.

    AI roleplay · 3 to 5 min

  • Riley

    Hard

Asking someone out before the moment passes

    Make your move in time

At a friend's barbecue you've been talking with Riley for the best part of an hour and it's gone really well, easy laughs and real conversation. People are starting to leave, and this could just end as a nice chat with a stranger. You want to ask them out before the moment slips away.

What to say

Real lines for real moments

Steal them or make them yours. Every script comes in warm, playful and direct, with a note on why it works.

  • Free script

    When the conversation goes quiet

The thread just ran out and you can feel both of you noticing. Three seconds of silence feels like thirty.

“I keep thinking about what you said earlier, about almost moving abroad. What stopped you?”
  • Free script

When you both start talking at the same time

You both spoke, both stopped, both said "sorry, go ahead", and now you're trapped in a politeness standoff.

“No, you first. I want to hear it, and I promise mine will keep.”
  • Free script

When you want to leave the party early

You've had a good time, and now you're done. But it's barely ten and you can already hear the chorus of 'nooo, stay!'

“I'm going to sneak out while I still love everyone here. This was exactly what I needed.”
  • Free script

When you need to end a conversation that won't end

It was a good chat ten minutes ago. Now it's circling, you're late for the rest of your life, and there's no natural pause in sight.

“I could talk to you about this all night, and that's exactly why I have to stop myself. I'm off to make my rounds.”
