Social skills

Social skills are a superpower

The fastest way to improve social skills as an adult is short, repeated practice in real situations, not reading more advice. Volo is a social skills app for iPhone that breaks the work into seven skills, 79 three-minute lessons, 25 AI roleplay conversations and 61 real-life scripts, then hands you a five-minute plan each day.

How do I improve my social skills as an adult?

Treat it like fitness. Pick one small skill, learn the move in a few minutes, then use it once that day in a low-stakes moment. Adults who improve fastest are not the ones who read the most; they are the ones who get the most repetitions. That is why every Volo lesson ends with one specific thing to try in the real world, and why the daily plan is sized to the five, ten or fifteen minutes you actually have.

Start with conversation. It underpins everything else: making friends, dating, work, even public speaking. Then add the skill that matches your goal.

Why am I so awkward around people?

Usually because your attention is pointed inward. When you are monitoring how you sound, what your hands are doing and whether the silence is your fault, there is nothing left over for the other person. That is not a personality flaw, it is a habit, and habits can be retrained. Volo's social anxiety and conversation lessons teach you to point attention back out, to recover from awkward silences without the panicked scramble, and to stop treating small talk as the whole conversation.

How do I improve social skills as an introvert?

You do not need to become louder. Introverts tend to be strong listeners and observers, and the skills that make people feel heard are the ones that build the deepest connections. What usually needs work is initiation: starting the conversation, joining the group, making the ask. Volo lets you rehearse those exact moments privately with an AI character before you do them for real, so the first attempt is never the one that counts.

Practice it out loud

Rehearse the real moments

Each roleplay puts you in a scene with a character who pushes back the way real people do. Type or speak your lines. A coach tells you what landed.

  • The other person

    EasyFree

Breaking the ice in a waiting room

    Turn silence into a chat

You're in the waiting room at a doctor's office with one other person, and it has been silent for ten minutes past your appointment time. The receptionist already warned you the doctor is running behind. You'd like to make the wait less awkward and maybe have a pleasant chat. The person beside you lets out a sigh, an opening you can take.

    Easy

    Introducing yourself at a party

    Walk up and say hello

You're at a friend's party where you barely know anyone. A small group near the snacks is chatting and laughing. Your friend is busy hosting. You want to walk over and join them rather than stand alone all night.

  • Dana, your manager

    Hard

Asking your manager for a raise

    Make your case for more

You've been here 18 months. Your last review was strong, you've taken on extra work since a teammate left, and you still haven't had a real raise. You've booked time in your one-on-one with your manager Dana to make the case. You sit down.

  • Riley

    Hard

Asking someone out before the moment passes

    Make your move in time

At a friend's barbecue you've been talking with Riley for the best part of an hour and it's gone really well, easy laughs and real conversation. People are starting to leave, and this could just end as a nice chat with a stranger. You want to ask them out before the moment slips away.

What to say

Real lines for real moments

Steal them or make them yours. Every script comes in warm, playful and direct, with a note on why it works.

  • Free script

When you want to talk to a stranger at a party

You've noticed someone who seems interesting, and every minute you wait makes walking over feel like a bigger deal.

“Hey, I only know the host here, so I'm making myself talk to new people. How do you know them?”
  • Free script

    When the conversation goes quiet

The thread just ran out and you can feel both of you noticing. Three seconds of silence feels like thirty.

“I keep thinking about what you said earlier, about almost moving abroad. What stopped you?”
  • Free script

When you want to leave the party early

You've had a good time, and now you're done. But it's barely ten and you can already hear the chorus of 'nooo, stay!'

“I'm going to sneak out while I still love everyone here. This was exactly what I needed.”
  • Free script

When you're invited and you don't want to go

There's no conflict, no excuse, no scheduling problem. You just don't want to go, and 'I don't want to' feels illegal to say.

“Thank you for thinking of me, honestly. I'm going to pass this time, I need a quiet one. Have the best night.”

Questions

Fair questions

Can social skills be learned as an adult?

Yes. Social skills are behaviours, not traits, and behaviours respond to practice at any age. Volo's biggest user group is in their 30s and 40s.

Is Volo like Duolingo for social skills?

That is the closest comparison. Short daily lessons, a streak, a plan that adapts to your goals. The difference is that Volo also makes you say the words out loud in AI roleplays and speaking drills.

How much time does it take each day?

You choose 5, 10, 15 or 20 minutes during onboarding and the daily plan is sized to fit. Most lessons take three minutes.
