Making friends

Making friends after school ends

Making friends as an adult is harder because the structure is gone: no classes, no dorms, nobody forced into the same room every day. Volo's making friends track rebuilds that structure on purpose, with eight lessons on where to meet people, how to ask someone to hang out and how to turn an acquaintance into a friend, plus AI roleplays where you rehearse the ask.

What you'll learn

8 lessons, three minutes each

Turn strangers into acquaintances and acquaintances into friends. Every lesson ends with one small step to try in the real world.

  1. 01

    Where to Actually Meet People

    Free

The format of a venue matters more than the activity. Pick the one that does the work for you.

    Lesson · 3 min

  2. 02

    Acquaintance to Friend

Plenty of people you like, few you'd call friends. The gap between the two is smaller than it looks.

    Lesson · 3 min

  3. 03

    Asking to Hang Out

The difference between an ask that lands and one that fizzles is usually the stuff you wrapped around it.

    Lesson · 3 min

  4. 04

    Opening Up

Somebody has to go first. How to do it without underdoing or overdoing it.

    Lesson · 2 min

  5. 05

    Being a Good Friend

Showing up for the small stuff matters more than showing up for the big stuff.

    Lesson · 2 min

  6. 06

    Keeping Friendships Alive

Friendships rarely end on purpose. They fade because nobody initiates, and breaking the silence costs about two lines.

    Lesson · 3 min

  7. 07

    When Friendships Drift

Not every friendship that fades did something wrong. Knowing which kind you're looking at is the skill.

    Lesson · 2 min

  8. 08

    When a Friendship Isn't Working

Staying loyal to something that's hurting you isn't kindness. It's a habit.

    Lesson · 3 min

How do I make friends as an adult in a new city?

Pick venues by format, not activity. A weekly class where the same people show up beats a one-off event every time, because friendship needs repetition more than it needs chemistry. Then make the ask early and small: a coffee after the class, not a weekend away. Volo's first making friends lesson, Where to Actually Meet People, is free, and the Turning a Chance Run-In Into Plans roleplay lets you practise the moment where "we should hang out sometime" becomes an actual Thursday.

How do I make friends in my 30s or 40s?

Most people your age want more friends and assume everyone else is sorted. That gap is your opening. The people you already like but never see are the easiest wins, and reviving a friendship costs about two lines. Volo's Keeping Friendships Alive lesson gives you the lines, and the Reconnecting With an Old Friend roleplay lets you try them on an AI version of that friend from a year ago.

How do I make friends with social anxiety?

Lower the rung. If a party is a ten, start with the gym regular you nod at every week. Volo's What To Say library has a script for exactly that person, and the social anxiety track teaches the exposure ladder so you climb at a pace that holds. Making friends and managing social anxiety are linked in Volo's daily plan, so you practise both together.

Practice it out loud

Rehearse the real moments

Each roleplay puts you in a scene with a character who pushes back the way real people do. Type or speak your lines. A coach tells you what landed.

  • Chris

    Easy

    Reconnecting with an old friend

    Pick a friendship back up

You're in line at a cafe when you spot Chris, a good friend you drifted apart from over a year ago. There was no falling out, life just got busy. You'd genuinely like to pick things back up. You step over to say hi.

    AI roleplay · 3 to 5 min

  • Jordan

    Easy

Turning a chance run-in into plans

    Turn a run-in into a friend

You really hit it off with Jordan at a friend's dinner last week, talking for an hour. You haven't seen them since. Now you spot them at the gym between sets. You'd like to turn this from a one-off into an actual friendship.

    AI roleplay · 3 to 5 min

  • Priya

    Easy

    Introducing yourself at a party

    Walk up and say hello

You're at a friend's party where you barely know anyone. A small group near the snacks is chatting and laughing. Your friend is busy hosting. You want to walk over and join them rather than stand alone all night.

    AI roleplay · 3 to 5 min

  • Mara

    Medium

Joining a conversation full of strangers

Find your way into the group

You're at a work social where you only know the colleague who invited you, and they've wandered off. A group of four is mid-conversation, laughing about a shared story you weren't part of. You want to join rather than check your phone in the corner.

    AI roleplay · 3 to 5 min

  • Maya

    Easy

Telling a friend you can't make their party

Say no and keep the warmth

Your friend Maya stops you after lunch, lit up, to invite you to her birthday dinner this Saturday. You're worn out, low on money, and you genuinely don't want to go. You want to say no now, in person, without bruising things.

    AI roleplay · 3 to 5 min

  • Hannah

    Hard

Telling a friend their cancelling hurts

Name the pattern, keep the friend

Your friend Hannah has bailed on you last-minute three times in a row, twice by text an hour before, once a no-show. You've started to feel like an afterthought. You're finally sitting down with her for coffee, and you want to tell her it's hurting the friendship without her getting defensive and shutting down.

What to say

Real lines for real moments

Steal them or make them yours. Every script comes in warm, playful and direct, with a note on why it works.

  • Free script

When you want to talk to a stranger at a party

You've noticed someone who seems interesting, and every minute you wait makes walking over feel like a bigger deal.

“Hey, I only know the host here, so I'm making myself talk to new people. How do you know them?”
  • Script

When you want to talk to someone you see at the gym every week

You've been nodding at each other for two months. You're basically acquaintances who have never spoken, and the silence is getting sillier.

Three ways to say it (warm, playful, direct) plus why each works. Unlocks in Volo.

  • Free script

When a friend asks for a favor you can't do

They need something real, you genuinely can't give it, and every draft of your reply sounds like either an excuse or a rejection of them personally.

“I hate saying this, but I can't take that on right now. I'd do it badly, and you deserve better than my leftovers.”
  • Free script

When a friend keeps canceling on you

Third cancellation in a row, always with a decent excuse. Individually they're all fine. Together they're starting to say something, and it stings.

“No stress about tonight. Can I say one thing though? That's three in a row, and I'm starting to wonder if something's up. With you, or with us.”

Questions

Fair questions

Is Volo an app for meeting people?

No. Volo does not match you with other users. It trains the skills so the people you meet in real life turn into friends.

How do I turn an acquaintance into a friend?

Increase frequency, open up a little first and make a specific ask. The Acquaintance to Friend and Asking to Hang Out lessons cover the exact wording.

What if I ask and they say no?

A no usually means timing, not rejection. Volo's lessons include how to make an ask that is easy to accept and easy to decline, so a no costs neither of you anything.

Does it cover friendships that are fading or not working?

Yes. When Friendships Drift and When a Friendship Isn't Working are both in the track.

Five minutes today. Different rooms tomorrow.
