The best Gleam alternative in 2026 is Volo if you want to practise conversations out loud and be told what worked in your own words. Gleam is a lesson-and-quiz app with a wide catalogue; the apps below trade some of that breadth for spoken practice, measured feedback or a tighter focus on everyday conversation.

Why look for a Gleam alternative?

People look past Gleam when they want to practise speaking rather than tapping, or when they want feedback on the exact thing they said. Gleam’s App Store listing describes bite-sized interactive lessons, quizzes and practice conversations across communication, emotional intelligence, networking and interviews, public speaking, negotiation, active listening, autism communication and leadership, with AI feedback on your communication style. It is rated 4.7 from more than 12,000 ratings on the App Store as of November 2026 and runs on iPhone and Android.

That breadth is the appeal and the limit. If your problem is one specific moment, such as joining a group of strangers or telling a friend something hard, a narrower app with spoken practice gets you there faster.

How we compared

We installed and used each app, then checked what we saw against its published features as of November 2026 on four points: whether the app makes you speak, whether the feedback refers to what you actually said, how focused the content is on everyday conversation, and which platforms it runs on.

1. Volo

Volo is the best alternative for people who want to rehearse a real moment and hear what landed. It is a mobile app with seven skill tracks and 79 lessons of two to four minutes, and 25 AI roleplay scenarios you can type or speak. Each scenario gives you a scene, a character with a personality and three goals; afterwards a coach marks each goal hit, partial or missed and quotes the lines you said. Teleprompter adds 15 read-aloud scenes that measure pace, filler words and your longest pause.

Where Gleam covers interviews, leadership and negotiation, Volo stays on social life and speaking: small talk, making friends, dating conversations, work conversations and public speaking. Volo is free to download and try.

Limitation: No job-interview roleplay.

Best for: spoken rehearsal of specific moments with feedback. Volo on the App Store · Social skills with Volo

2. Socially

Socially is the closest match to Gleam’s daily-lesson format. Socially describes short daily lessons with scenario practice and AI feedback, observation exercises for reading body language, reflection prompts and micro-actions to try in real life, with a learning path built from your goals. It is on iPhone and free to download, with a small number of ratings so far.

Best for: a personalised lesson plan in Gleam’s style.

3. fredie

fredie is for people whose goal is friendships rather than performance. fredie lists lessons that adapt to you on small talk, saying no, overthinking and deep conversation, built on cognitive behavioural therapy, mindfulness and interpersonal therapy. It runs on iPhone and Android.

Best for: therapy-informed lessons, and Android.

4. Altiora

Altiora is scenario training without any speaking. Altiora presents a social situation, four responses and one best answer, then explains the principle behind it, across seven modules and more than 10,000 questions. Its site says it is free on iPhone, with Android listed as coming soon.

Best for: people who want to think through social situations before they practise them aloud.

5. Convo

Convo is short daily speaking exercises. Convo describes guided conversation practice with feedback on how you speak and, in its own words, no awkward roleplay. It is on iPhone with a membership for full access.

Best for: speaking practice for people who dislike roleplay.

6. Vocal Image

Vocal Image is voice training with roleplay attached. Vocal Image builds a daily plan from AI roleplay, voice analysis, breathing exercises and diction drills, and runs on iPhone, Android and the web.

Best for: working on how you sound as well as what you say.
