Comment on the shared situation, then ask a question the other person can answer with a story. "How do you know the host?" beats "How are you?" because it gives them somewhere to go. The opener matters far less than you think; what matters is the second and third exchange, where you follow the thread they hand you. Work small talk has a job: it makes the real conversations easier later. Keep it short, make it about them, and let it end at the natural peak. Parties are about joining, not opening. Most of the conversations are already happening, so the skill is finding your way into a group without stopping it.
