Volo is worth it if you will use the practice features, and less useful if you only want to read lessons. Volo is a social skills app for iPhone and Android with more than 50,000 users that trains conversation, body language, public speaking, making friends, social anxiety, work communication and dating through three-minute lessons, AI roleplay you can speak to, and read-aloud speaking drills with measured feedback. This page is written by the Volo team, so it isn’t an independent review; we’ve tried to be as plain about the limits as about the strengths.

Note the name: this is Volo the social skills app, not Volo Sports, the rec-league app that shares the name.

What is Volo?

Volo is a mobile app that works like a gym for social skills. During onboarding you pick goals (be more confident, improve public speaking, make friends, boost your career, improve your dating life), choose how many minutes a day you’ll commit (five to twenty), and the app builds a daily plan: usually a lesson, a roleplay scenario and a speaking drill.

As of September 2026, the library has seven skill tracks with 79 lessons, 25 AI roleplay scenarios, 15 Teleprompter speaking scenes, Open Mic, a What To Say library of 61 scripts in eight categories, and a free “How You Come Across” social style test.

What does Volo do well?

Volo does four things well: short lessons, roleplay with real pushback, measured speaking drills and ready-to-use scripts.

The lessons are short and teach one thing. Each lesson takes two to four minutes, is built from chat examples, compare cards, tap-to-reveal steps and do-versus-don’t pairs, and ends with one specific thing to try in the real world that day. “Small Talk Without Cringing” reframes small talk as the warm-up rather than the conversation. The tone is calm and adult.

The AI roleplay has real pushback. Each scenario has a scene, a character with a defined personality and three goals. Asking for a raise puts you across from a manager who deflects with “tough quarter” until you cite specific contributions. Telling a friend their joke stung gives you a friend who gets briefly defensive and softens if you stay calm. You can speak your replies or type them. The feedback screen marks each goal hit, partial or missed, and quotes your own lines, which makes it useful rather than flattering.

Teleprompter measures your voice. A script scrolls like a teleprompter, the app records you, and you get words per minute against a target band, a filler count, your longest pause and a short coaching note. The scenes mix real situations (office presentation, wedding toast, TED-style opening) with playful ones (gate announcer, evening news). One scene takes about a minute.

Open Mic makes you talk without a script. You pick a topic from a spinning reel of 44 prompts (“What’s one small win you’ve had this week?”, “Is small talk a waste of time?”) or write your own, then talk for up to two minutes. You get your pace against a conversational band, filler words, pauses, a transcript and a short AI note on what worked and what to try next. Recordings stay on your phone, and a month calendar marks the days you spoke. It is the closest thing in the app to being put on the spot.

What To Say gives you the words. The library covers 61 situations, each with lines in warm, playful and direct tones and a note on why they work: “When the conversation goes quiet”, “When you’re invited and don’t want to go”, “When you’re interrupted in a meeting”. You can save lines, and each links to the lesson or roleplay that trains the moment.

What are Volo’s limits?

Volo’s main limits are that its library is deep rather than wide, and AI practice is not a substitute for people.

No web or desktop version. Volo is a phone app, on iPhone and Android. There is nothing to use at a laptop, and it does not record meetings or calls.

The library is deep, not wide. Seventy-nine lessons is a few months of daily work. Apps with larger catalogues exist; they tend to be shallower, but if you want years of content, Volo isn’t that yet.

AI practice isn’t people. The roleplays are rehearsal, not a substitute for actual conversations. Volo pushes you outward at the end of every lesson, but you have to go.

Practice is short by design. Lessons are two to four minutes and drills are about a minute, so Volo suits a daily habit more than a long study session. If you want hour-long courses, look elsewhere.

Who is Volo for?

Volo is for adults who want to practise, not just read. The content is written for adult situations: raises, return-to-office pushback, reconnecting with old friends, dating with some history behind you. It suits introverts and people with mild social anxiety who want private repetitions. It is not for anyone who wants a community, a leaderboard or a dating-app style experience.

So is Volo worth it?

Volo is worth it if you’ll use the practice features daily. It makes you say the words, out loud, and tells you what landed: the lessons are focused, the roleplays push back, and Teleprompter gives you numbers on your own voice. Held against it: a library you’ll finish in months, and no web or desktop version. If you mainly want to read tips, a free resource will serve you as well.
