The best CBT-based app for social anxiety is Innerworld, because it puts you in guided groups with other people, which is the part of CBT for social anxiety that solo apps cannot give you. Wysa is the easiest solo option, and MindShift CBT has the most free tools but is no longer maintained. Volo ranks fourth because it is a practice tool, not a CBT program.
CBT apps are self-help tools. They can teach techniques that clinicians also use, such as challenging thoughts and facing feared situations in steps. They do not diagnose or treat. If social anxiety limits your life, a doctor or licensed therapist is the right next step.
How we compared
We installed and used each app, then checked what we saw against its published features as of September 2026 on four points: whether the app teaches CBT-style techniques, whether it helps you face situations in steps, whether it involves real people, and what it costs. Woebot’s consumer app was retired in June 2025, and Sanvello now sits inside AbleTo for members only, so neither is ranked.
1. Innerworld
Innerworld is the only option here that puts you with other people. Innerworld runs guide-led group sessions in a virtual space where you appear anonymously as an avatar, using what it calls Cognitive Behavioral Immersion, which combines CBT principles with immersive environments. It matches members to groups by challenge, including social anxiety, and works on mobile, tablet and VR. Innerworld says it is not therapy, and its guides are trained by the company, not licensed therapists.
Limitation: sessions run on a schedule, so it is less flexible than a solo app.
Best for: CBT-based group practice with real people.
2. Wysa
Wysa is the easiest way to try CBT-style exercises in a chat. Wysa is an AI companion with CBT and DBT-inspired self-help techniques, mindfulness exercises and guided tools for anxiety, anger and conflict. Its App Store listing says it does not offer diagnostic measurements or treatment advice. It has a free version and paid tiers, and works on iPhone.
Limitation: it does not rehearse social situations.
Best for: CBT-inspired chat exercises on demand.
3. MindShift CBT
MindShift CBT has the most free CBT tools here, but it is no longer maintained: Anxiety Canada, the charity behind it, states on its website that it ceased operations as of 1 April, and the App Store listing shows the last update in September 2024. It still installs and still works. Its App Store listing, from 247 Labs Inc, describes thought journals, fear ladders, coping cards for cognitive restructuring, behavioural experiments, guided meditations, daily mood check-ins and a community forum for adults. It is free with no subscriptions, and it runs on iPhone, iPad and Mac.
Limitation: it addresses anxiety in general, so it does not give you social scenarios to rehearse.
Best for: free CBT tools, if you accept an app that will not be updated.
4. Volo
Volo is practice, not CBT and not therapy. It is a mobile app whose nine-lesson Managing Social Anxiety track includes Breaking Thought Spirals, Reframing Nerves, The Exposure Ladder, Dropping Safety Behaviors and When to Seek Help. Those lessons cover ideas that overlap with CBT-style self-help, in 2 to 4 minutes each.
What it adds is somewhere to practise the exposure step. Its 25 AI roleplays, which you type or speak, let you rehearse situations in private, and the coach quotes your own lines back. Volo is educational and has no in-the-moment panic tool.
Limitation: It is a broad social skills app, not an anxiety program.
Best for: practising the exposure step: rehearsing conversations. Volo on the App Store · Social anxiety with Volo

When is an app not enough for social anxiety?
An app is not enough when avoidance is shaping your job, friendships or health, or when anxiety comes with panic or low mood. A doctor or licensed therapist can assess it, and CBT delivered by a clinician is a standard treatment option. Apps can support that work between sessions.
