The best public speaking course online in 2026 is the Dynamic Public Speaking Specialization from the University of Washington on Coursera, because it is a full four-course programme that has you prepare and deliver speeches, not only watch lectures. Volo is not a course, so it is ranked last as a daily-practice companion.

Courses teach structure, delivery and how to manage nerves. The speaking itself still has to happen, so the better courses here include assignments you record or deliver.

How we compared public speaking courses

We compared each provider’s own pages as of September 2026 on four points: who teaches it, how long it runs, whether it includes speaking assignments, and what the provider says about cost. Where a page does not publish a price, we do not quote one.

1. Dynamic Public Speaking Specialization (Coursera)

This University of Washington specialization is the most complete online option here. Coursera lists Dr. Matt McGarrity as instructor and four courses: Introduction to Public Speaking (12 hours), Speaking to Inform (14 hours), Speaking to Persuade (17 hours) and Speaking to Inspire (16 hours). It is beginner level, takes 4 to 6 months at a suggested pace, and includes peer review and a VR practice experience. Coursera says the specialization is not free, and that financial aid may be available. Its Introduction to Public Speaking course can be audited free, with a certificate on enrolment.

Best for: a full structured programme with speech assignments. Coursera specialization

2. Rhetoric (HarvardX on edX)

Rhetoric: The Art of Persuasive Writing and Public Speaking teaches how persuasive speech is built. Harvard’s course page lists 8 weeks at 2 to 3 hours a week, self-paced, based on Professor James Engell’s on-campus class. You can audit for free, and a verified certificate costs $209, as of September 2026. It is theory and analysis of speeches more than delivery practice.

Best for: the theory of persuasive speech, free to audit. Harvard course page

3. Stage Academy (Vinh Giang)

Stage Academy is a self-paced video course on communication and speaking. Vinh Giang’s page lists 8 modules, more than 120 video lessons totalling over 13 hours, lifetime access, and a typical pace of 8 to 12 weeks. It lists a price of $1,495, shown as discounted to $499 for the Academy and Community bundle, as of September 2026.

Best for: a large self-paced video course. Stage Academy

4. Toastmasters Pathways

Toastmasters is not a course, but its Pathways programme is the best way to speak to real people. Its education page describes six learning paths with more than 300 competencies, self-paced, built on speeches, club roles, peer feedback and mentoring. Toastmasters lists a $72 semiannual international dues payment and a one-time $25 new member fee, and says visiting a club is free. See is Toastmasters worth it.

Best for: speaking to real people with peer feedback. Toastmasters

5. LinkedIn Learning public speaking courses

LinkedIn Learning offers many short courses on single problems. Its public speaking topic lists Public Speaking Foundations by Laura Bergells (1 hour 1 minute), Managing Your Anxiety While Presenting by Matt Abrahams (25 minutes) and Overcoming Your Fear of Public Speaking by Todd Dewett (19 minutes).

Best for: short courses on one problem at a time. LinkedIn Learning

6. Volo

Volo is not a course, and it is a daily-practice companion to one. It is a mobile app. Teleprompter has 15 read-aloud scenes of 60 to 75 seconds that measure words per minute, filler-word count and longest pause, with a coach note, and Its lessons run 2 to 4 minutes, and there are 25 AI roleplays.

Limitations: you read provided scripts rather than uploading your own talk.

Best for: daily speaking drills alongside a course. Volo on the App Store · Public speaking with Volo

What should you look for in a public speaking course?

Look for speaking assignments and feedback, because those separate a course from a lecture series. Public speaking improves when you deliver something and hear what went wrong, whether from peers, an instructor or a recording. Check the total time as well: a four-course specialization suits a long project, while a short video course suits a single worry such as nerves. A free audit option lets you sample the teaching before you pay for anything.

How do the public speaking courses compare?

The Coursera specialization is the longest structured online option, and Toastmasters is the only one with a live audience.

Option Format Time as published Speaking practice
Coursera specialization Self-paced online 4 to 6 months Assignments, peer review, VR
HarvardX Rhetoric Self-paced online 8 weeks, 2 to 3 hours a week Limited
Stage Academy Self-paced video 13+ hours Workbook and exercises
Toastmasters In person clubs Ongoing Live speeches
LinkedIn Learning Short videos 19 minutes to about 1 hour No
Volo Mobile app 60 to 75 second scenes Measured drills

Should you take a course or practise daily?

Do both if you can, because a course gives structure and daily reps build the habit. Start with a course when you do not know how to structure a talk. Start with daily drills when you know the material and freeze or rush. For app-only options, see the best public speaking practice apps.
