Toastmasters is worth it if you want regular practice in front of real people and will attend; it is a poor fit if you need one talk polished this week.

Speaker addressing a small audience in a meeting room

Toastmasters is worth it if you want regular practice in front of real people and you will show up to your club, and it is a weaker fit if you need one presentation fixed quickly.

What is Toastmasters?

Toastmasters is a membership organisation of speaking clubs. Its membership page says there are over 14,000 clubs worldwide, in person or online, and you can browse them before joining. Members give speeches, take meeting roles and receive feedback from other members. See toastmasters.org.

How does Toastmasters teach?

Toastmasters teaches through its Pathways learning experience. Its education page describes six specialised learning paths with more than 300 competencies. It says Pathways is built on experiential learning through speeches and club roles, peer feedback and evaluation, mentoring from experienced members, and self-paced advancement.

Toastmasters does not publish a fixed duration for a path; progress depends on how often you speak at your club.

What does Toastmasters cost?

Toastmasters lists two charges. As of September 2026, its how-to-join page states a $72 USD semiannual international dues payment and a one-time $25 USD new member fee. Visiting a club is free. Toastmasters also offers a self-directed Public Speaking Fast Track programme. Clubs may add their own charges; check with the club you visit.

What do you actually get?

You get a live audience, a fixed rhythm and human feedback. That is the part apps cannot copy. You also get practice at leadership roles, because club meetings are run by members.

Toastmasters Speaking apps
Audience Real people None, or an AI
Feedback Peer evaluation and mentors Instant automated measures
Structure Six Pathways paths Lessons or scenarios
Schedule Set by your club Whenever you like
Cost Dues plus new member fee Free tiers and subscriptions

What don’t you get?

You do not get private, on-demand practice, and you do not get measurements on demand. Feedback arrives at the meeting, from volunteers of varying experience. If a talk is due Thursday, a club meeting next week is too late. Progress also depends on your club, and clubs vary.

Who should join Toastmasters?

Join if your goal is comfort in front of a live room and you like community. It suits people who benefit from a scheduled commitment and want to practise leading a meeting. Visit first, since visiting is free.

Who should skip Toastmasters?

Skip it if you have a talk within days, if fixed meeting times will not fit your week, or if the idea of a first speech in front of strangers means you will not go at all. In those cases, private practice first is a better route.

Where does Volo fit?

Volo fits as private daily practice, not as a replacement for a room of people. It is an iPhone app with 7 skill tracks, 79 lessons of 2 to 4 minutes, 25 AI roleplay scenarios you can type or speak, and Announcer Studio: 15 read-aloud scenes of 60 to 75 seconds that measure words per minute, filler-word count and longest pause, with a coach note. The Gate Announcer scene is free.

Volo is for everyday conversation and short speaking drills. It is not presentation analytics, it is not an in-person club, and it is not on Android. Many people use an app for private reps and a club for the live audience. See the best public speaking practice apps or public speaking with Volo. Volo on the App Store
